Fluoride Facts: What Is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a widely distributed mineral that we absorb through food and water. It is not an essential nutrient; while it protects against cavities, an overdose can quickly lead to fluorosis or other health problems.

How Do You Absorb Fluoride?

Fluoride is omnipresent in our daily lives: toothpaste, tea, fish with bones, fluoridated salt, seafood, mineral water, grain products.

What Does Fluoride Do to Your Body?

Since 2015, the U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP) has been investigating the effects of fluoride on neurotoxicity and endocrine disruption. The brain responds sensitively at 1–2 mg/l, the thyroid gland at 2–4 mg/l.

Why Is the Correct Dosage Important?

The correct toothpaste dosage not only protects against cavities but also prevents fluoride overdose. The official recommendation for fluoride toothpaste is: pea-sized. Studies show that parents use significantly more toothpaste.

Prevention: Without Fluoride – Without Risk

The addition of fluoride in toothpaste is particularly controversial for children under 6 years of age. Children in particular swallow a large portion of their toothpaste.

Risk-free dosage

The uncontrollable swallowing of fluoride toothpaste can be particularly harmful to children. Therefore, the common recommendation is to use a rice grain-sized amount of toothpaste.

An overdose can cause fluorosis.

    Remineralization

    Acid protection

    During bacterial acid attacks, BioHAP releases calcium, which maintains the healthy mineralization of the enamel and reduces the tooth-damaging acidic pH value in the oral cavity.

    Biofilm control

Frequency & Duration

FAQ: Answers to your questions

The use of fluoride in toothpaste is particularly controversial for children under 6 years of age. Children in particular swallow a large portion of the toothpaste.

Due to the intake of additional sources of fluoride (vitamin D supplements with fluoride, fluoridated salt, etc.), the risk of developing fluorosis (white spots on the teeth caused by increased fluoride intake) increases significantly. For example, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment points out that if a children’s toothpaste with 500 ppm fluoride is swallowed, just as much fluoride is ingested as, for instance, through fluoridated salt.

According to the new recommendations, the amount of swallowed fluoride can therefore double. The risk of fluorosis is significantly higher with toothpastes that have a higher fluoride content (from 1000 ppm).
