The use of fluoride in toothpaste is particularly controversial for children under 6 years of age. Children in particular swallow a large portion of the toothpaste.

Due to the intake of additional sources of fluoride (vitamin D supplements with fluoride, fluoridated salt, etc.), the risk of developing fluorosis (white spots on the teeth caused by increased fluoride intake) increases significantly. For example, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment points out that if a children’s toothpaste with 500 ppm fluoride is swallowed, just as much fluoride is ingested as, for instance, through fluoridated salt.

According to the new recommendations, the amount of swallowed fluoride can therefore double. The risk of fluorosis is significantly higher with toothpastes that have a higher fluoride content (from 1000 ppm).

KAREX relies on the tooth-related active ingredient Hydroxyapatite (BioHAP) in all products. When swallowed, it is simply dissolved in the stomach. Numerous studies confirm its effectiveness: Hydroxyapatite repairs enamel with every brushing, reduces bacterial adhesion, and thus provides effective protection against cavities.

Our tooth enamel consists almost entirely of Hydroxyapatite. That is why BioHAP (biomimetic Hydroxyapatite) is used as an active ingredient in oral care. The highly concentrated active ingredient also serves as a source of calcium and protects our teeth against bacterial acids. Numerous studies confirm the benefits of Hydroxyapatite in the field of oral care and prevention.

Numerous publications confirm the effectiveness of BioHAP in dental care. These include not only laboratory studies (in vitro) but also studies with test specimens under oral cavity conditions (in situ), as well as, in particular, clinical studies on patients (in vivo).
For more information, feel free to read the German short summary or the original study. You can get an overview of the large number of studies on Hydroxyapatite as an active ingredient in dental care by browsing our study database (usable without registration).

Effective cavity protection is important from the very first tooth. However, babies and toddlers swallow almost all of the toothpaste while brushing, as they are not yet able to spit at that age.

BABY KAREX Toothpaste is the ideal introduction to daily toothbrushing. From the first tooth, it gently cleans and at the same time provides effective protection against cavities – with BioHAP, without fluoride.

The BABY KAREX formula contains only the most essential ingredients and completely avoids fluoride, surfactants, and flavorings, and is harmless if swallowed.

BABY KAREX Toothpaste can be used without hesitation from the very first tooth. It contains only the most essential ingredients, is completely free from fluoride, surfactants, and flavorings, and is therefore harmless even if swallowed.
BABY KAREX provides effective protection against cavities while being fluoride-free. Therefore, unlike other children's toothpastes, it is not subject to any dosage restrictions, which makes the daily toothbrushing routine with your child easier.

BABY KAREX Toothpaste has been specially developed as an introduction to the toothbrushing routine. From the very first tooth, it gently cleans and at the same time provides effective protection against cavities – with BioHAP and without fluoride. In addition, the BABY KAREX formula contains only the most essential ingredients and completely avoids surfactants and flavorings in order to protect the sensitive oral cavity of the little ones. The taste is pleasantly mild and tailored to babies’ flavor preferences. We recommend BABY KAREX Toothpaste for ages 0–2 years.

KINDER KAREX Toothpaste has been developed for the care of sensitive milk teeth. It offers effective cavity protection with BioHAP, without fluoride. KINDER KAREX remineralizes the teeth and minimizes bacterial adhesion. The fluoride-free formula reduces the risk of fluorosis. The mild flavor is popular with children. We recommend KINDER KAREX Toothpaste up to 6 years of age as a follow-up product to BABY KAREX. However, it can also be used without hesitation for babies from 0 years of age.
